Between c.1309 and 1403 the popes established their court in Avignon, transforming the already prosperous city into an important centre of art and architecture, the legacy of which lasted well into the sixteenth century. This special issue on Avignon brings together articles covering a wide range of subjects over a long time span, from the late twelfth-century consuls’ palace to the frescos in the Papal Palace, the patronage of the cardinals in Avignon and the late fifteenth-century workshop of the painter Jean II Changenet. There is a particular focus on Matteo Giovannetti, the painter of the pope: Dominique Vingtain explores recent scholarship and evaluates the restoration of the artist’s frescos in the Papal Palace and at the Carthusian Abbey Val-de-Bénédiction.

Among the reviews in this issue, Lihong Liu assesses an exhibition on treasures from Jiangnan in Cleveland, Annette Hojer discusses Venetian Renaissance painting on display in Munich and Elizabeth Pergam visits the expanded and refurbished Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
