Oil Paintings in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly
(Approx $44.80 or €33.60)
The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly catalogue reveals 1,556 publicly owned oil paintings from 54 collections across the county and archipelago off Land's End. The largest single collection is the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro with just over 400 paintings. Other significant holdings are found at Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance and Falmouth Art Gallery. The smaller collections include volunteer-run museums, hospitals, libraries, town councils and two fire stations. Brought together in one volume, these paintings constitute an important visual record of the counties' history and topography as well as the artists who lived and worked there.
The Public Catalogue Foundation is a charity passionate about making art accessible to the public and educational research. Between 2003 and 2012, they digitised all 210,000 oil paintings in public ownership around the United Kingdom (80% of which are not on view), resulting in this series of affordable catalogues and an online database. They are currently working to digitise the nation’s public sculpture collection.
