This volume includes over 2,400 paintings from publicly owned collections throughout the City of Sheffield. The magnificent collection of Museums Sheffield spreads across four locations and encompasses paintings ranging from seventeenth-century Baroque Spanish art with examples by Murillo and Ribera to paintings by Cézanne, Gauguin and Renoir. In addition, universities, hospitals, councils, courts, libraries, archives, and the county fire and rescue service all reveal their paintings in this unique volume. World famous painters feature alongside local artists who often take their inspiration from Sheffield's famous steelworks. The collections also reflect the generosity of wealthy benefactors, from industrialists to academics, who have left the City with such a rich array of artworks.
The Public Catalogue Foundation is a charity passionate about making art accessible to the public and educational research. Between 2003 and 2012, they digitised all 210,000 oil paintings in public ownership around the United Kingdom (80% of which are not on view), resulting in this series of affordable catalogues and an online database. They are currently working to digitise the nation’s public sculpture collection.
