This catalogue reveals approximately 2,700 paintings across Fife, Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire. The collections are diverse: from museums and university collections, to hospitals, colleges and schools. The largest include the Smith Art Gallery and Museum and Fife Council, between them comprising nearly 1,500 works. The variety of pictures from the region is impressive, spanning some 600 years of art from across the globe. This catalogue provides an insight into the wealth of art in Scottish collections – from a fourteenth century Tibetan scroll, to seventeenth-century Dutch painters, and covering the most prominent names in British art from the last 300 years.

The Public Catalogue Foundation is a charity passionate about making art accessible to the public and educational research. Between 2003 and 2012, they digitised all 210,000 oil paintings in public ownership around the United Kingdom (80% of which are not on view), resulting in this series of affordable catalogues and an online database. They are currently working to digitise the nation’s public sculpture collection.
